Book Your Fall 2026 Gutter Cleaning Before the Leaves Drop
Fall is the busiest — and most important — time to clear your West Hartford gutters. Here's why October scheduling protects your home before winter ice.
Every fall we run a booking wave from mid-October through early December — the window between when maple and oak leaves finish dropping and when the first hard frost sets in. It’s the single most important home-maintenance visit for a Connecticut homeowner, and it’s the one that gets skipped most often. Here’s why we push so hard on scheduling it before Thanksgiving.
The ice-dam problem
A clogged gutter in November holds wet leaves that freeze into a solid ice plug by December. When the first big snowstorm hits and the sun warms the roof, meltwater runs down the shingles, hits the ice plug at the gutter, and backs up under the shingles. From there it finds the soffit, the fascia, and often the wall cavity below.
The repair for that scenario — soffit replacement, fascia rebuild, occasional interior drywall repair from a wall leak — typically runs $1,500–$5,000. The gutter cleaning that prevents it runs $150–$300.
Why late October is the sweet spot
If you clean too early, half the leaves are still up in the trees. Too late and the wet leaves freeze in place. Mid-to-late October — after peak leaf drop, before the first hard frost — is the ideal window in West Hartford and the Farmington Valley.
What a proper gutter cleaning includes
At our shop, a standard fall gutter cleaning visit covers:
- Hand-clearing every gutter run (not just blowing debris toward the downspout)
- Flushing every downspout to confirm actual flow
- Re-securing any gutter section that has pulled loose from the fascia
- Photographing anything that needs a follow-up — torn soffit, missing splash block, damaged fascia
- Cleaning up the ground beneath so nothing lands in your garden beds
If we spot soffit or fascia damage while we’re on the ladder, we can quote and often fix it in the same visit. That’s the advantage of using a full-service handyman in West Hartford rather than a single-service gutter contractor.
